MALAWI HUMAN RIGHTS YOUTH NETWORK HOLDS YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL GOVERNANCE LIVE RADIO TALK SHOWS IN BLANTYRES AND MZUZU.
With support from United Nation Democracy Fund (UNDEF), the Malawi Human Rights Youth Network is implementing a two year governance project that has an aim of empowering the youth to take part in local governance and democratization process at both local and national level. One of the key project activities is live radio talk shows in all regions of the country. So far there have been two talk shows held in Blantyre and Mzuzu in the month of February and March 2016.
The talk show envisaged to increase public awareness of the roles and levels of participation of the youth in local governance structures in the central region (Lilongwe). The talk shows are a way of creating awareness as well as bringing to the public domain local governance issues of concern to the youth for debate and possible solutions. Therefore, the ‘Talk Shows’ created awareness on the importance of increased youth participation in local governance. Key findings during the talk shows will be consolidated into a report and respective key action points will be noted for advocacy and follow up by MHRYN, partners and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. The issues raised during the talk show have been placed on the MHRYN website (www.mhryn.org) and project face book page (Youth Empowerment for Participation in Local Government –MHRYN).Recordings of the talk shows have been kept on DVD/CDs for future re-broadcast and reference.
The regional talk shows have broaden the platform for the youth, duty bearers, local governance experts and the public to discuss, live on radio, youth and governance issues that are unique in southern and northern region and the national at large. Critical youth participation issues have been identified for advocacy and future programming
The talk shows brought together youth activists from the Civil Society Organisations in the regions, councilors and other development partners who thoroughly discussed youth participation issues and agreed on some structural changes and capacity development initiatives to be made if young people in Malawi
are to effectively participate in local governance. In Blantyre the Talk show was held at Malawi Sun Hotel while in Mzuzu the show was held at Mimosa Court Lodge. Zodiac Broadcasting Station anchored and aired both Talk Shows.
The Malawi Human Rights Youth Network intends to hold a central region live Radio Talk Show in Lilongwe on 29th April 2016. The talk show will bring together panelist from Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, National Youth Council of Malawi. Young Politician Union and other partners.
